A graphic pattern materializes from the apparent void of the white picture: Horizontal lines dominate a finely woven grid in various shades of gray. Its density and structure are in a state of flux: Stripes shift; lines are overwritten; and pixels condense and form blocks, underlining the grid’s vertical structure. The picture switches between these two spatial coordinates, only once providing them with something like equality, and eventually returns to its starting point. “A pictorial element has no other significance than ‘itself,’ ” stated Theo van Doesburg in 1930 in his call for a form of abstract art he termed “Concrete,” which among other things was based on antiimpressionistic techniques and intended to exclude any symbolic implication. On the visual level Void.seqz 3 seems to satisfy this demand: The creation process makes use of a computergenerated, automatic process, which is rational and objective. The sound level on the other hand thwarts this effort: Greatly reduced at the beginning, it con-denses into soundscapes that shed their dependence on the picture’s structure and rhythm. Analog particles are recognizable as such and also contribute to a subjective and emotional charge, which for the viewer leads to a visualization process running contrary to the visual level. It is this conflict which provides Void.seqz 3 with its peculiar melancholy charm.
